Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Rape and Incest in Marange

A 45-year-old man from Odzi, located approximately 41 kilometers west of Mutare in Manicaland, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being convicted of raping his 14-year-old niece. The ruling was issued by the Mutare Magistrate Court, which found the man guilty on two counts of rape and one count of incest.

According to court records, the incidents occurred in June 2024, when the victim’s mother was away. The man took advantage of this absence, luring the girl to his room where he raped her. After the assault, he instructed her to keep the incident a secret.

Two weeks later, the man again called the girl to his house. This time, he detained her overnight and raped her once more. When the victim’s mother returned home and noticed her daughter was missing, she began searching for her. Eventually, she discovered the girl hiding under the man’s bed.

Upon being questioned, the young girl confided in her mother about the abuse, prompting the family to file a police report. The man was subsequently arrested and brought to trial.

In sentencing, the court imposed 15 years for the rape charges and an additional five years for incest, resulting in a total effective sentence of 20 years in prison. This case has brought attention to the pressing issues of sexual violence and the need for greater protection for vulnerable individuals in society.
