Govt invests US$5m for street lights

In a major development to enhance the safety and security of Harare’s residents, the government has allocated $5 million to install more than 1,100 street lights in and around the city’s central business district.

So far, the government, through local contractors, has already installed 514 street lights as part of this ongoing project. Of these, 427 were installed by Ship Tracks Private Limited, while the remaining 87 were erected by Exodus and Company.

The targeted number of street lights to be installed under this initiative is 1,161.

On Thursday, Local Government and Public Works Deputy Minister Benjamin Kabikira, representing Minister Daniel Garwe, commissioned some of the newly installed lights in the city. The ceremony was also attended by the Minister for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Harare Metropolitan, Charles Tawengwa, Harare Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume, and other senior government officials.

Speaking on behalf of Minister Garwe, Deputy Minister Kabikira said the project marks a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to improve the safety, security, and quality of life for Harare’s residents and investors.

“Street lighting is more than just a physical infrastructure; it is a symbol of progress, development, and our commitment to creating a safer and more vibrant community,” Kabikira said, adding that the project aligns with President Mnangagwa’s vision of transforming Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income and prosperous society by 2030.

The deputy minister emphasized that the street lighting project will not only enhance safety and security by providing better visibility but also stimulate economic activity and foster a sense of well-being among the city’s residents.

Minister Tawengwa echoed these sentiments, stating that the installation of street lights would ensure safer streets, particularly for women, and promote social interaction and legitimate business activities.

The project is a testament to the collaborative efforts between the central government, the City of Harare, and the contractors involved, demonstrating the government’s commitment to public-private partnerships and an open-door policy.

As Harare continues to transform, this street lighting initiative is expected to play a crucial role in improving the quality of life for its residents and attracting more investors to the city.
