Thousands of people gathered at the Mashonaland East Provincial Heroes Acre in the farming town of Marondera today to join the nation in commemorating Heroes Day.

The provincial celebrations were attended by a range of attendees, including members of the opposition Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) party, such as legislator Caston Mateu and CCC councilors. Relatives of the heroes and heroines interred at the provincial shrine, as well as ordinary citizens and members of the uniformed forces, were treated to a variety of entertainment during the event.

Dr. Apollonia Munzverengwi, the Minister of State for Mashonaland East Provincial Affairs and Devolution, presided over the celebrations. She inspected a quarter guard made up of a detachment from the Second Brigade before reading the President’s Speech.

Minister Munzverengwi then led service chiefs and war veterans’ leaders in laying wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. She also visited some of the relatives of the heroes and heroines buried at the provincial shrine, chatting with them and thanking them for joining the nation to mark Heroes Day and visiting the graves of their departed loved ones.

Similar celebrations were held across the province’s nine districts, as the nation came together to honor the sacrifices of those who fought for the country’s independence.
