“ZRP reports a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 21 July 2024 at around 7.50PM at the 70km peg along Ngundu-Tanganda Road in which eight people died while two others were injured,” the police statement read.

The injured passengers were rushed to Collin Saunders Hospital and Chiredzi General Hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the 8 victims were transported to the Chiredzi Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.

This tragic incident has once again highlighted the alarming state of road safety in Zimbabwe, where an average of 5 people die every day due to road traffic accidents, according to authorities. The government has faced public criticism for its failure to implement sustainable measures to address this growing crisis.

Last year, the government ordered helicopters from Russia to aid in quick reaction and disaster management for such emergencies, but little progress has been made in utilizing these public assets to their full potential.

As the nation mourns the loss of these 8 lives, the call for urgent action to improve road infrastructure, enforce traffic regulations, and provide better emergency medical response has become more pressing than ever before. Zimbabweans are hopeful that the government will prioritize road safety and take concrete steps to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
