Beitbridge Set For 9th Mayor’s Anti-Litter Half Marathon

The 9th edition of the Beitbridge Mayor’s anti-litter half marathon is set to take place this Saturday, as the town continues its efforts to address its growing solid waste management challenges.

The race, which will be held under the theme “Beitbridge My Home, My Smart City: Running Against Litter”, aims to raise awareness about the issue of littering in the town, which produces at least 1,000 tonnes of solid waste every month, with the council only able to collect around 700 tonnes.

According to race spokesperson Raniel Ndou, preparations for the event are well underway, with the organizers hoping to reach their target of 500 participating athletes.

“The race registration fee is US$5 or the equivalent at the bank rate of the day,” Ndou said, adding that the event will feature three main races – the 21.1km half marathon, a 10km race, and a 5km power walk for the 16-19 years category.

The race route will once again follow the Beitbridge-Bulawayo highway, as it has in previous editions, to ensure less traffic disruption.

In addition to the races, the organizers have also invited mayors and councillors from other towns to participate and witness the event, which will be livestreamed this year, a first for the Beitbridge Mayor’s anti-litter marathon.

“A clean-up will be carried out on Friday, June 21, along the marathon route,” Ndou said, highlighting the community’s overwhelming support for the initiative.

The Beitbridge Mayor’s anti-litter half marathon has become a key event in the town’s efforts to address its solid waste management challenges and promote environmental awareness among its residents.
