Army Commander Calls for Resolute, Patriotic Service

The Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA), Lieutenant-General Anselem Sanyatwe, has urged the country’s uniformed forces to remain resolute, patriotic and loyal in carrying out their constitutional mandate of defending Zimbabwe’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Lt-Gen. Sanyatwe was presiding over the command exchange ceremony between Colonels Andrew Kabaira and Richard Mapanda at the Charles Gumbo Barracks in Harare last week.

Speaking to the assembled troops, the army commander stressed that discipline and patriotism are the cornerstones of the ZNA in achieving its objectives.

“As you witness this handover and takeover parade, I want you to fully support your commanders so that they will be able to realize the visions set,” Lt-Gen. Sanyatwe said. “As you execute your duties, don’t forget that commanders are assigned to command you, hence discipline, loyalty and dedication to duty is of paramount importance.”

The commander explained that the change in command was a normal practice in the ZNA, as officers are moved from one appointment to another in line with the overall staffing requirements of the organization.

“This system of management helps to develop officers into versatile and all-round leaders capable of handling the ever-changing demands of the military profession,” he said.

Addressing the issue of conditions of service, Lt-Gen. Sanyatwe acknowledged the challenges facing the defense forces, but assured the troops that the government was working to find lasting solutions.

“Ladies and gentlemen, as Commander Zimbabwe National Army, I am aware of the challenges we face as a nation in general and as the defense forces in particular,” he said. “This is a passing phase and we should remain focused as a professional army. I am seized with these challenges and let me highlight to you that all the issues that are raised are being actioned.”

Taking over command of the Harare District Garrison, Colonel Mapanda promised to implement an open-door policy to address pertinent issues affecting the garrison. He emphasized that peace and tranquility remain key in creating a conducive environment for economic activity as the nation strives to attain an upper-middle-income economy by 2030.

Outgoing commander, Colonel Kabaira, said it had been an honor to command one of the ZNA’s prestigious formations.
