Sengezo Tshabangu Appointed as New Leader of the Opposition in Parliament

In a significant political development, Matabeleland North Province Senator Sengezo Tshabangu has been appointed as the new Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.

The announcement was made earlier today by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Advocate Jacob Mudenda, in the National Assembly.

Tshabangu’s assumption of this crucial role means he will serve as the point person for the Government and any stakeholders in their engagement and interaction with the opposition on various issues. This includes constituting portfolio committees, particularly the appointment of chairpersons who will occupy slots earmarked for the opposition in international organizations such as the Pan African Parliament (PAP), SADC Parliamentary Forum, International Parliamentary Union (IPU), and the African, Caribbean and Pacific-European Union (ACP-EU), among others.

In addition to his new role as Leader of the Opposition, Tshabangu has also been appointed as a member of the Parliament Standing Rules and Orders Committee, which is the legislative assembly’s supreme decision-making body.

He is now also a member of the International Parliamentary Union, the world’s parliamentary body.
