ZDF honors the lives of the four soldiers

The Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) conducted a solemn funeral parade to honor the lives of four soldiers who tragically lost their lives in a head-on collision along the Harare-Bulawayo Road. The accident occurred at the 180km peg, claiming the lives of Brigadier General Shadreck Vezha, Major Mqondisi Gumbo, Major Thabani Ncube, and Sergeant Learnmore Chakabaiwa. The collision occurred approximately 2km from Battlefields.

The funeral parade took place at Ngezi Barracks, where Commander ZDF Philip Valerio Sibanda led the tribute to the fallen soldiers. Brigadier General Vezha, who was traveling with Lieutenant Colonel Moyo Singazi and civilian Tawanda Siatare, collided with a vehicle driven by Major Gumbo, who was accompanied by Major Ncube, Sergeant Chakabaiwa, Sergeant Thomas Chegogo, Colonel Sola Nompilo, and Corporal Sibonisiwe Ncube. Several passengers from both vehicles sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Gweru and Kwekwe General hospitals. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the accident.

During the tribute, Commander ZDF Philip Valerio Sibanda commended Brigadier General Vezha for his dedication and exemplary service to the army. He highlighted Vezha’s unwavering commitment to the country’s liberation and his notable contributions to diplomatic missions in Angola and Syria. Remembered for his strong work ethic and ability to connect with people, Brig Gen Vezha left behind a legacy of excellence and unity.

Speaking to the bereaved families of Chakabaiwa, Ncube, Gumbo, and Vezha, Commander Sibanda expressed deep condolences and acknowledged the great loss suffered not only by the families but also by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces and the nation as a whole. He urged everyone to cherish their selfless service and honor their contributions to the country.

Brigadier General Vezha, born on August 10, 1961, in Chivi, Masvingo Province, joined the liberation struggle as a ZANLA combatant and received military training in North Korea. He served in the ZNA from 1982 until his passing, attaining the rank of Brigadier General. Major Gumbo, born on December 26, 1982, rose through the ranks from Second Lieutenant in 2003 to Major in 2015. Major Ncube, born on November 6, 1978, had a distinguished career, holding various appointments, including Brigade Major. Sergeant Chakabaiwa, born on March 10, 1984, was a dedicated soldier attached to Army Headquarters AS Branch.
