Government Commits to Honoring Veterans and Enhancing Support Systems

By Priviledge Zviregei

In a recent statement, Senator Monica Mavhunga, the Minister of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs, emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to upholding its constitutional obligations of honoring and respecting the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for the freedom enjoyed today. Speaking during the signing of performance contracts by the chairpersons of four boards under her ministry, Sen Mavhunga highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to review the needs of veterans and their dependents.

The government currently provides essential entitlements to veterans in the form of pensions, medical assistance, educational support, and funeral benefits. Recognizing the dynamic nature of the economic environment, these benefits undergo regular reviews to ensure their alignment with prevailing conditions. However, Sen Mavhunga acknowledged that despite these reviews, the existing benefits may not be adequate to cater to the comprehensive needs of veterans and their dependents.

To address this challenge, the government has taken proactive steps to fulfill its commitment. Under the leadership of President Cde Dr E D Mnangagwa, specific assets such as land, mining claims, and tourism assets have been allocated to the veterans of the liberation struggle through public entities like the Veterans Investment Corporation and Power Zimbabwe. These assets are expected to contribute significantly to the growth of the Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Fund by generating regular dividend income streams. The ultimate goal is to augment government efforts in economically empowering the veterans.

Senator Mavhunga called upon the boards overseeing the various sectors to adopt a resourceful and innovative approach in their operations, rather than relying solely on the Treasury. This strategy aims to promote self-sufficiency and efficiency within the boards, enabling them to better serve the veterans and their dependents. By fostering a culture of accountability and effective service delivery, the government seeks to ensure that its commitments translate into tangible results and measurable progress.

The boards responsible for overseeing the welfare of veterans and their dependents comprise individuals who have either served as veterans themselves or are widows of departed heroes. Senator Mavhunga highlighted the significance of this composition, emphasizing that the opportunity to serve one’s own colleagues should be a motivating factor. She urged the board members to work with passion and to consider the collective benefits they can deliver to their fellow veterans. By doing so, they can contribute to the well-being of the nation as a whole.

The government’s commitment to honoring and respecting the sacrifices made by veterans remains resolute. Through ongoing reviews of existing benefits, allocation of specific assets, and the signing of performance contracts, the government aims to ensure that veterans and their dependents receive the support they deserve. By fostering resourcefulness, accountability, and a strong work ethic, the government endeavors to fulfill its constitutional obligations and enhance the overall well-being of the nation.
