During a recent media interaction in Harare, Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr. Jenfan Muswere, alongside other key ministers, highlighted the Second Republic’s impressive achievement of delivering 700,000 housing units under the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1). This accomplishment surpasses the initial target of 220,000 units, with a new goal set for one million units by 2025.
Minister Muswere facilitated the session aimed at fostering better interactions between journalists and Cabinet ministers. Among the attendees was National Housing and Social Amenities Minister Zhemu Soda, who expressed optimism about surpassing the revised housing target.
“Since the inception of the Second Republic, guided by the President’s vision, we have aimed to construct a substantial number of houses during this strategy period, which runs from 2021 to 2025,” Minister Soda stated. He explained that an assessment in April last year revealed the completion of 272,000 houses, prompting the Cabinet to increase the target to one million units.
“As we speak, we have already achieved more than 700,000 housing units, which accounts for over 70 percent of our targets. This positions us well to achieve our goals by 2025,” he added.
Minister Soda underscored that housing delivery is a collective responsibility, involving collaboration with various stakeholders, including pension funds, insurance schemes, individuals, and civil society. He emphasized ongoing partnerships with banks like BancABC, CBZ, and CABS, which are crucial for private sector participation in the housing sector.
“We are crowding in the private sector by creating a conducive investment environment where they can find opportunities to participate in the housing delivery sector,” Minister Soda concluded.
The government, under President Mnangagwa’s leadership, remains committed to providing affordable, modern, and safe housing, recognizing it as a fundamental need for citizens. The revised housing targets reflect the administration’s dedication to improving living conditions and advancing national development goals.
