In response to a troubling surge in robbery incidents nationwide, security companies are forging partnerships with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Support Unit to enhance security for cash-in-transit deliveries and other operations. This initiative aims to address growing concerns about public safety and criminal activities.
The ZRP Support Unit plays a crucial role in various security operations, including public order management, major disaster response, and protection of vital installations and VIPs. Their responsibilities also extend to border patrols and anti-stock theft initiatives.
Last Thursday, The Herald observed heavily armed officers from the Support Unit actively engaged in duties at a security company located in Southerton, Harare. The visible presence of armed officers underscores the urgent need for heightened security measures in response to rising crime rates.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the collaboration, stating, “We have always said those who want police services in terms of training and any other assistance can approach the Commissioner-General of Police, Godwin Matanga. If security companies request police assistance, there is nothing sinister about that. As police, we are here to enhance security whenever needed.”
At a recent Crime Liaison Committee (CLC) workshop held in Harare, police officers were encouraged to adapt their strategies to counter evolving criminal tactics. The workshop brought together various officers-in-charge and CLC chairpersons from different levels, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation.
Commissioner Maxwell Chikunguru highlighted the sophistication of modern criminals, referencing a recent $4 million bank heist that occurred in broad daylight. “This incident underscores the urgent need for us to adapt our strategies in response to these evolving threats,” he said.
Chikunguru urged community members to share intelligence about criminal activities and work together to implement crime prevention measures. “Together, we must create a united front to safeguard our neighborhoods and restore a sense of security for all residents,” he added.
Dr. Nathaniel Madzivanyika, CLC chairperson for Harare Province, emphasized the importance of trust between the police and the public. He noted that effective policing in today’s interconnected world relies on strong relationships and open communication. “The trust between the police and the public is essential for effective policing,” he stated.
Dr. Madzivanyika praised the police’s scientific approach to crime prevention and community engagement, asserting that a crime-free society can be achieved through collaboration. He also highlighted the role of community policing in combating various crimes, including terrorism and domestic violence.
“Every member of society has a role to play in combating crime,” he said. “It is our duty to ensure that law and order are maintained as we advance the community policing initiative.”
As concerns about crime continue to rise, the collaboration between security companies and the ZRP Support Unit aims to bolster public safety and restore confidence in law enforcement. Together, they hope to create a safer environment for all citizens in Harare and beyond.
