The government has launched a significant initiative to draft a Gender Equality Bill aimed at ensuring 50 percent female representation across all sectors of the economy. This move is seen as a crucial step toward advancing women’s rights and empowerment throughout the nation.
The proposed Bill is designed to provide support and safeguard the interests of women in various aspects of life. To facilitate its development, the Ministry of Women Affairs, Small and Medium Enterprises Development has commenced consultations with local authorities, civil society organizations, and community leaders, among other stakeholders.
During a national stakeholder consultative meeting on the African Union Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls held last week in Harare, Mrs. Lilian Matsika-Takaendesa, Chief Director of Gender Policy Planning and Programme, emphasized the importance of these consultations.
“As a ministry, we recognize the call from various stakeholders for a Gender Equality Act that will enhance gender mainstreaming in both public and private sectors,” she stated. “We are currently gathering input on what the Bill should address while also seeking partners to fund the consultation processes.”
Mrs. Matsika-Takaendesa highlighted that the consultation process will be inclusive, reaching from village levels to the central government, where the Bill will eventually be enacted. “This initiative transcends individual ministries; we are committed to collaborating with various partners and engaging communities, including local women, girls, and chiefs, who are the custodians of our culture,” she added. “Our goal is to unite all stakeholders to consult and advocate for the development of the Bill.”
In support of this initiative, Commissioner Obert Matshalaga from the Zimbabwe Gender Commission (ZGC) stated that the Commission is actively engaging with relevant parties who can contribute to the legislation’s drafting. “We are currently consulting with key stakeholders and seeking guidance from experts who can help tailor the legislation to our needs,” he noted.
The Gender Equality Bill represents a pivotal moment for Zimbabwe as it seeks to promote gender equity and empower women across all sectors of the economy. The government’s commitment to this cause signals a progressive shift towards a more inclusive and equitable society.
