How Do You Plan to Fix Libya?
While Barack Obama’s recent apology for the intervention in Libya is acknowledged, it’s too little, too late. The damage has already been done.
Libya, once a stabilizing force in North Africa under Gaddafi, is now a fractured nation struggling under the weight of civil war, militias, and foreign interference.
The dreams of a unified Africa that Gaddafi championed were assassinated along with him. The repercussions are felt across the continent, as Libya was pivotal in shaping an African Renaissance.
Libya’s intervention not only killed Gaddafi, but it killed the future of African unity and self-determination.
Obama’s apology does not rebuild nations, does not return sovereignty to the people, and does not heal the fractures caused by Western imperialism disguised as “humanitarian intervention.” The destruction of Libya has set back African progress by decades.
What is Obama offering to stabilize Libya? What solutions does he bring for the restoration of the Libya that once supported African development? The African people are tired of apologies without action.
If the Obama-led intervention was truly a “mistake,” we expect concrete steps to restore the stability Libya once had before NATO’s intervention.
We are in the process of rebuilding the movement, but Western powers must be held accountable for the damage done.
This is a wake-up call to Africa – we must unite to protect our own interests and never again allow outsiders to destroy our future. Libya deserves restoration, and Africa deserves better.
