by Priviledge Zviregei

Air Zimbabwe has announced the resumption of flights between Harare and Johannesburg. Starting yesterday, the national airline will operate flights on a twice-weekly schedule, providing a much-needed connection between the two bustling cities.

The reintroduction of these flights comes as a welcome relief for many Zimbabweans who have long relied on connecting through other African hubs to reach their destinations in Europe. With the return of direct flights, the journey will not only be more convenient but also more cost-effective, as passengers will no longer have to bear the additional expenses associated with layovers and multiple transfers.

“We are thrilled to reconnect these bustling cities and enhance travel options for our passengers,” the airline said in a statement. “A big thank you to our loyal passengers for the continued support.”

The news also comes on the heels of the government’s efforts to position Zimbabwe as a regional aviation hub. The ongoing upgrades at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare are expected to increase the airport’s capacity to handle up to six million passengers annually, up from the current 2.5 million.

This expansion, coupled with the country’s “Open Skies” policy, has already attracted more than 20 additional airlines to operate flights into Zimbabwe, further improving the nation’s global connectivity and opening up new business and tourism opportunities.

The reintroduction of direct flights to the United Kingdom, a move that is currently in the works, is also expected to provide a significant boost to Zimbabweans traveling to Europe. With thousands of the country’s citizens already making the journey via South Africa, Kenya, Dubai, or Ethiopia, the direct flights will undoubtedly cut costs and streamline the travel experience.

As Air Zimbabwe takes to the skies once again, the nation’s aviation sector is poised for a resurgence, ensuring that Zimbabweans and international travelers alike can explore the country’s rich cultural heritage and vibrant business landscape with greater ease and convenience.
