Harare City Council Adopts New Sports and Arts Committee to Nurture Youth Talent

The Harare City Council has adopted a new Sports and Arts Committee, officials announced on Tuesday.

Speaking at a workshop for the newly established committee, Harare Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume emphasized the crucial role that cities worldwide play in investing in sports and infrastructure.

“Harare will be following suit,” Mafume declared, outlining the sporting disciplines set to be nurtured under the committee’s purview. These include swimming, tennis, rugby, taekwondo, basketball, and volleyball, among others.

The mayor highlighted the transformative power of sports, drawing inspiration from the success stories of prominent figures like Minister of Sport, Arts and Recreation Kirsty Coventry, and football legend Norman Mapeza.

“Sport has the ability to develop individuals into great people,” Mafume said, underscoring the council’s commitment to harnessing the city’s youthful talent through the new Sports and Arts Committee.

The initiative comes as part of Harare’s broader efforts to invest in sports and cultural infrastructure, reflecting a growing recognition of the vital role these sectors play in community development and empowerment.

With the new committee in place, Harare residents can look forward to an enhanced focus on nurturing the next generation of sports and cultural icons, poised to leave an indelible mark on the city and the nation at large.
