VP Chiwenga Leads Zimbabwe’s Participation at Dushanbe Water Action Decade Conference

Vice President Dr. Constantino Chiwenga has arrived in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, where he will lead Zimbabwe’s delegation at the third Dushanbe Water Action Decade Conference starting tomorrow.

VP Chiwenga is accompanied by his wife Colonel Miniyothabo Chiwenga, Deputy Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Vangelis Haritatos, and other senior government officials. He was received upon arrival by Tajikistan Deputy Prime Minister Usmonali Usmonzoda.

The conference aims to coordinate the global response to sustainable water use and water challenges posed by climate change. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is scheduled to participate in the deliberations, as the world pushes for the appointment of a UN Under-Secretary to champion water-related issues.

Speaking to journalists, VP Chiwenga emphasized the centrality of sustainable and maximum water utilization to Zimbabwe’s economic development plan. “Water is now becoming a very scarce commodity, and each country must ensure they have enough water not only for their people but also for agriculture and other sectors,” he said.

The Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) agenda is crucial to Zimbabwe’s aspirations of becoming an empowered upper-middle-income economy. Water is a key input across various economic sectors, including agriculture, mining, and manufacturing.

VP Chiwenga said Zimbabwe is attending the conference to share ideas and learn from the global community on addressing water challenges induced by climate change. The Dushanbe Water Action Decade Conference provides a platform for world leaders to coordinate efforts towards sustainable water management.
