Eventually, the wreckage of the helicopter was located, revealing the extent of the devastation caused by the crash.

Ebrahim Raisi, widely regarded as a potential successor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, met an untimely demise in the helicopter accident, marking a significant loss for Iran’s political landscape. Alongside Raisi, the crash claimed the lives of prominent figures including Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, underscoring the magnitude of the tragedy. As investigations into the cause of the crash unfold, the nation remains united in grief, reflecting on the legacy of those who perished in the ill-fated flight.

A senior Iranian official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the incident, informed Reuters that President Raisi, the foreign minister, and all other passengers aboard the helicopter perished in the crash.

Later, Vice President Mohsen Mansouri confirmed Raisi’s death via social media, a statement that was echoed on state television. It’s anticipated that First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will assume the presidency.

Reports from state media indicated that the wreckage of the U.S.-made Bell 212 helicopter was found on a mountain peak. However, the cause of the crash has not been officially determined. Among the casualties were the governor of East Azerbaijan Province and a senior imam from Tabriz city.

Raisi, aged 63, assumed the presidency in 2021, implementing stricter morality laws, suppressing anti-government protests, and actively engaging in nuclear negotiations with global powers.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, responsible for foreign policy and the nuclear program, reassured Iranians of continuity in state affairs following the incident.
