Air Zimbabwe, the national carrier, has announced that it will now accept payments in Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG), a move that is expected to enhance confidence in the newly introduced currency. In a statement released on the X platform (formerly Twitter) yesterday, Air Zimbabwe expressed its commitment to adapt to the evolving financial landscape by offering stakeholders convenient payment options.
“As we integrate Zimbabwe Gold currency into our payment systems, we are finalizing the process of its acceptance on our online platforms,” Air Zimbabwe stated. The airline is making efforts to establish a seamless and secure online transaction system that accommodates the ZiG currency, which is backed by gold, as well as other precious minerals and a basket of foreign currencies.
This decision follows in the footsteps of another local airline, fastjet, which has already started accepting payments in ZiG. The move by fastjet has bolstered public confidence in the new currency, which was introduced on April 5th of this year. Fastjet offers routes from Zimbabwe to Johannesburg, South Africa, as well as local routes from Harare to Bulawayo and Victoria Falls.
To facilitate transactions, the ZiG currency will be available in various denominations. Coins will be issued in denominations of 1 ZiG, 2 ZiG, and 5 ZiG, while notes will be circulated in denominations of 10 ZiG, 20 ZiG, 50 ZiG, 100 ZiG, and 200 ZiG. These new notes and coins are set to enter circulation on April 30th.
The acceptance of ZiG by Air Zimbabwe marks a significant step forward for the new currency and showcases the airline’s commitment to providing convenient and adaptable payment options for its customers.
