Rank Marshal Arrested in Connection with Extortion Case

In a recent development, another individual believed to be part of an alleged syndicate involved in extorting money from kombi operators through illegal entry charges at the Market Square terminus in Harare has appeared in court. Cuthbert Chamwakaona, also known as Dombo, stood before Harare magistrate Mrs Appollonia Marutya, facing charges of extortion.

According to the prosecutor, Mr Rufaro Chonzi, the accused, Chamwakaona, along with an accomplice identified as Maricho, who is still at large, and Nelson Makonese, who appeared in court last Friday on similar charges and was granted bail of US$100, claimed ownership of the bus rank. It is alleged that this organized group had been carrying out their illegal activities from September 2022 until this month.

The victim in this case, Jephat Motsi, had been operating from Market Square, specifically running the Budiriro 4 and 5 routes and driving commuter omnibus number 285, which falls under the Greater Harare Association of Commuter Omnibus Operators (GHACO).

This recent arrest follows the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to crack down on the extortion racket that has plagued the Market Square terminus. The syndicate’s modus operandi involved demanding illegal entry charges from unsuspecting kombi operators who wished to access the terminus.

The court proceedings are expected to shed more light on the extent of the operation and the involvement of other individuals in the alleged syndicate. The authorities are actively pursuing the remaining suspect, Maricho, and are hopeful that his apprehension will provide valuable information to aid in dismantling the group completely.

Extortion and illegal activities within the public transportation sector have been a growing concern in Harare, causing financial strain on operators and disrupting the smooth flow of daily operations. The recent arrests and subsequent legal actions against those involved demonstrate a commitment to combating such criminal activities and ensuring a safer environment for public transport operators and passengers alike.
