Man in Domboshava sets Wife on fire

A shocking incident in Domboshava has left a community in disbelief as a man was arrested and charged with murder after allegedly setting his estranged wife on fire. The suspect, Ashley Kabaya (29), from Zimbiru village under Chief Chinhamhora, reportedly committed the heinous act during a heated argument over the division of matrimonial property.

The tragic incident unfolded on April 15 when Kabaya and his wife, Sphiwe Jenyure, were in the process of sharing their belongings in a room as they finalized their divorce. According to sources, tensions escalated, and Kabaya locked the door from the inside before launching a violent attack on Jenyure with a golf stick. Shockingly, he then proceeded to douse her body with a deadly mixture of cobra venom and paraffin before setting her ablaze.

Jenyure, displaying extraordinary courage, fought back and managed to grab Kabaya, inadvertently causing both of them to catch fire. A passer-by named Zulu Digital, who happened to be nearby, heard the victim’s cries for help and swiftly intervened. With the assistance of other community members who had gathered at the scene, Digital managed to open the door and extinguish the flames.

Both victims were immediately rushed to Makumbe Hospital in Domboshava for emergency treatment. However, due to the severity of their burns, they were later transferred to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for specialized care. Sadly, Sphiwe Jenyure succumbed to her injuries on April 17 at Parirenyatwa Hospital. A postmortem examination is scheduled to determine the exact cause of her death.

Ashley Kabaya, currently recovering from his own burns at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, now faces murder charges for his alleged actions. During a court hearing, Harare Magistrate Dennis Mangosi advised Kabaya to seek bail through the High Court.

The community remains shaken by this horrifying incident, and there is an outpouring of support for the victim’s family. Local organizations and activists are calling for justice to be served swiftly, urging authorities to ensure a thorough investigation into the matter.

The case serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of addressing domestic disputes through peaceful means and seeking professional assistance when needed. It also highlights the need for increased awareness and support for victims of domestic violence.

The court proceedings will continue as Ashley Kabaya awaits his bail hearing in the High Court, where the severity of the charges against him will be further examined.
